Family friendly museums in Tokyo you didn’t know existed

10. Ghibli Museum, Mitaka

You can find everything Ghibli related here.

Recommended amount of time needed: 2 hours

Opening hours: 10:00am – 6:00pm. Closed on Tuesdays. 

Admission fee: All tickets are sold in advance.  1000yen for adults, 700yen for junior high school students, 400yen for elementary school students, 100yen for 4 years old and above. 

Location: Mitaka-shi, 1-1-83 Simonrenjaku. A bus ride from Mitaka station. 

11. National Museum of Nature and Science, Ueno

A large museum with plenty of exhibits on nature and science. There is also a play area designed for kids aged 4 -6 years old.

Recommended amount of time needed: 1 day

Opening hours: 9:00am – 5:00pm on weekdays, 9:00am – 8:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Closed on Mondays. 

Admission fee: 620yen for adults and college students. Free for high school students and under. 

Location: Taito-ku, 7-20 Ueno Park. 5 mins walk from JR Ueno station, 10 mins walk from Tokyo Metro Ginza/Hibiya Line station or Keisei Ueno station. 

12. Tokyo Fire Museum, Yotsuya

A museum with a helicopter, and various fire vehicles. There is also an area for for kids to dress up as a fire fighter and take a picture.

Recommended amount of time needed: 1/2 a day

Opening hours: 9:30am – 5:00pm. Closed on Mondays. 

Admission fee: Free

Location: Shinjuku Ku, Yotsuya 3-10. Right at exit 2 of Yotsuya-sanchome station. 

13. Miraikan(National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation), Odaiba

A place that showcases cutting-edge science and technology. You can interact with robots here, and participate in science workshops.

Recommended amount of time needed: 1 day

Opening hours: 10:00am – 5:00pm. Closed on Tuesdays. 

Admission fee: 620yen for adults, 210 yen for 18 years old and below. 

Location: Koto-ku, Aomi, 2-3-6. 4 mins walk from Funenokagakukan station on Yurikamome Line. 

14. TeamLab Digital Art Museum. Borderless in Odaiba and Planets in Toyosu.

TeamLab has 2 separate exhibits; Borderless and Planets. Both are extremely interactive. The athletic forest in Borderless is really popular with children.

Borderless

Opening hours: 10:00am – 7:00pm on weekdays, 10:00am – 9:00pm on weekends. Closed on 2nd and 4th Tuesdays. 

Admission fee: 3200yen for 15 and above, 1000yen for children aged 4 – 14. 

Location: 5 mins walk from Tokyo Teleport Station or Aomi Station. 

Planets

Opening hours: 10:00am – 10:00pm on weekdays, 9:00am – 10:00pm on weekends. 

Admission fee: 3200yen for 15 and above, 1000yen for children aged 4 – 14. 

Location: 1 min walk from Shin Toyosu Station, 10 mins walk from Toyosu Station.
